Day 2 / Discover Assisi, home of St. Francis

Breakfast. Head for Monte Subasio for a private guided walking tour of Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis and Italy’s famous pilgrimage site. Discover all the facets of the Old Town (Roman walls and medieval houses), including the Basilica of Santa Chiara, dedicated to the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, and the papal Basilica of St. Francis, built between 1228 and 1253. Now home to the consecrated remains of the saint, the stunning monument is also said to have the best collection of art in any church of Italy, including frescoes and paintings by Cimabue, Giotto, Lorenzetti and more. Time at leisure for lunch and the remainder of the day is yours to explore Assisi as you please. Complete your day by a dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight.

Day 3 / Medieval Todi & Black Truffles

Breakfast and travel to Todi. Meet your local guide just a few steps out of the city centre and admire the Renaissance architecture of Santa Maria della Consolazione (in contrast with Todi’s medieval historic centre). Then on to the historic centre where you will find some of the most important buildings, including the People’s Palace and the Captain’s Palace. From Piazza Garibaldi enjoy the breath-taking view of the countryside below. Enjoy a truffle-based lunch in a typical family-run farmhouse before returning to the hotel. Time at leisure. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4 / Ancient Spoleto & Wines

Breakfast. Today enjoy an excursion to stunning Spoleto. The town is presided over by a formidable medieval fortress and backed by the broad-shouldered Apennines. The Romans left their mark in the form of the grand arches of the Bridge of Towers and an amphitheatre; the Lombards made it the capital of their duchy in 570, building it high and mighty and leaving it with a parting gift of a Romanesque cathedral in the early 13th century. Meet your local guide for a walking tour which includes Spoleto's pretty pale-stone cathedral, originally built in the 11th century using huge blocks of salvaged stones from Roman buildings for its slender bell tower. After this visit to the past savour a tasty light lunch at a local winery, followed by a guided tour of the cellars. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon to relax. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5 / The dying town of Civita di Bagnoregio & Orvieto

Breakfast. Today the tour will take you to Civita di Bagnoregio, also known as the dying city. This little fascination town sits atop a huge stack of slowly crumbling tufa rock and is accessible by footbridge only. At the end of the guided visit enjoy some time at leisure for a light lunch. Then on to Orvieto, perched on a plateau of tufo rock. Enjoy a guided visit to the Duomo, a true gem of Gothic architecture, and admire the Apocalypse fresco cycle by Luca Signorelli. Top of your day with a tour of Orvieto’s underground. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 6 / Perugia, the noble & Chocolate

Breakfast. Today is all about chocolate and art. Learn about the history of Perugia’s chocolate factory and enjoy a chocolate-making lesson by the Chocolate Masters. Then on to the heart of Umbria’s largest town for a lunch in a local restaurant followed by a guided walking tour taking in the medieval Palazzo dei Priori with its fine frescoes, the Fontana Maggiore and the medieval ghost town built in to the foundations of the Papal castle. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 7 / Romantic Lake Trasimeno

Breakfast. Today enjoy an exclusive boat tour on Lake Trasimeno. Sail across to the island of Isola Maggiore, the only island on the lake that is inhabited. Stroll through the fishing village dating back to the 15th century and visit its 12th and 14th centuries’ churches. On board again savour an aperitif with local specialties. Return to the hotel and enjoy some free time to relax. Farewell dinner in a unique setting, accompanied by jazz entertainment. Overnight.

Day 8 / Ciao Italy

After breakfast transfer to Rome Fiumicino Airport for the flight back home. Arrivederci!
